About the Island
Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third-largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island. It is 112 kilometres south-west of Adelaide at the entrance of Gulf St Vincent. At its closest point to the mainland, it is 13 kilometres offshore from Cape Jervis, on the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula in the state of South Australia. It is approximately 150kms long by 50kms at the widest point, with a population of only about 4,500. With so many places and attractions allow at least a few days to explore and enjoy this pristine environment.
Wildlife
Kangaroo Island has been described as the “last frontier” and offers a wonderful wilderness experience and adventure.
Kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, possums, seals, sea lions and goannas inhabit the island. Rabbits and foxes have never been introduced. Koalas can also be seen.
Bird watching is a delight with many species of aquatic and land birds all over the island.
The Coast
The coastline is spectacular, ranging from magnificent, wild, rugged beaches to calm coves suitable for swimming. The ocean is crystal clear and the sand is almost white turning the sea to shades of turquoise.
Kangaroo Island is noted for its great fishing and several fishing charters are available. The host has been a professional fisherman for 30 years and is willing to share his knowledge with guests, whether it is shore-based or boat fishing.
For the more adventurous, why not try a swim with the dolphins, or a quad bike ride amongst the wildlife?
For those who prefer to stay on firm ground, viewing the seals at Admiral’s Arch or the endangered Australian Sea Lions at Seal Bay are not to be missed!
